Jenah Barry, Retail Manager of The Shop at Wave Hill, brings to the position the sensibilities of artist and floral designer.
First up: Whimsical products and useful tools for the thoughtful gardener in your life. It’s colder outside, but still such a pleasure to work indoors—especially when equipped with elegant garden tools engraved with inspirational thoughts. Our favorite: “I garden therefore I am.”
Bulbs! We have put together a selection ideal for forcing indoors over winter, or for outdoor planting in anticipation of spring. I recently spent a lovely afternoon in our Potting Shed chatting with Wave Hill’s gardeners about their favorite bulb varieties, and have made a selection that our gardeners will be planting at Wave Hill this spring—including glory of the snow (Chionodoxa sardensis) that graces our gardens with a glorious carpet of blue—Narcissii, Crocus, Muscari and some unusual specialty tulip varieties that you will see featured in our Flower Garden and Pergola plantings. A plant from Wave Hill makes the perfect gift for the gardener that has everything!
Handcrafted pots and planters: Two of my personal favorites are Campo De Fiori’s beautiful terracotta planters, aged with live moss, and Daniel Bellow’s hand-thrown porcelain works, glazed in a gorgeous, subtle palette of black, white, gray and metallics. Bellow is passionate about his work, which he creates by hand on the potter’s wheel, one piece at a time, in a 19th-century carriage barn in the Berkshires. As he says, things that are made by hand “have a life of their own, a spirit.”
And finally, delicious body products! We enjoy the Royal Horticultural Society’s range of products, inspired by great gardens. We particularly recommend RHS’s exfoliating soap scrub, which incorporates crushed walnut shells. Follow it with nourishing shea butter hand lotion for pampering thereafter! These are a treat for the hard-working hands of the gardener you love.
