Open Engagement: Facilitating Social Practice Art

Jennifer McGregor is Director of Arts & Senior Curator at Wave Hill.

Jennifer McGregor is following the 100 Questions in 100 Days Open Engagement Blog, which leads up to the 2014 Open Engagement conference in New York City in May, 2014.  The conference is presented in partnership with the Queens Museum, a Blade of Grass and the Social Practice Queens program at Queens College CUNY.

Today Jennifer addressed the following question: “How can institutions support of facilitate social practice art?”  At Wave Hill, she finds that visitors are very keen to work with artists and understand their processes. Through the Winter Workspace Program and the Collective Art Projects, artists share their practices with the public. Showcased below is the collective art project, led by artist Maria Hupfield, on the occasion of the reopening of historic Wave Hill House after a two-year renovation. (Our thanks to photographer Joshua Bright for the use of the photo.) Upcoming opportunities for engagement include the Winter Workspace Open Studios on March 30 from 1 to 3pm, and Nick Lamia’s Collective Art Project on April 13 from 1 to 4pm.
