Plant of the Week: Sparmannia

A lovely little flowering shrub from South Africa, Sparmannia africana has been blooming happily in the Palm House of the Marco Polo Stufano Conservatory for many weeks. It is a member of the mallow family and has acquired several common names, including wild stock rose and Cape hollyhock.

The white petals have a reflexed (swept back) habit that perfectly reveals the true glory of the flower—the clustered puff of yellow-and-maroon stamens.
