Plant of the Week: Purple Bell Flower

Rhodochiton atrosanguineus, commonly known as the purple bell flower, is a climbing vine from Oaxaca, in southern Mexico, and is surely one of the most bizarre blooms to be found in the Palm House.purple-bell-flower-1

This second shot shows it blooming just outside the entrance to the Cactus & Succulent House. purple-bell-flower-2You can see a little bit of the stiff, metal-mesh support that the gardeners have trained it on, allowing the flowers to present themselves to great effect.
