Plant of the Week: Watsonia humilis

Charles Day is Wave Hill’s Ruth Rea Howell Horticultural Interpreter.

Named in honor of Sir William Watson, an eighteenth-century naturalist and doctor, this lovely flowering bulb is native to the southwestern Cape of South Africa.

Watsonia humilis is one of many species of South African bulb and about the last one to bloom. See it on display in the Palm House, the center section of the Marco Polo Stufano Conservatory. It’s in the foreground of this second shot.
