Jenah Barry, Retail Manager of The Shop at Wave Hill, brings to the position the sensibilities of artist and floral designer.
One of the many delights of working at Wave Hill is the truly phenomenal, kind and thoughtful team of staff. The Shop at Wave Hill prides itself in our Shop associates. They are friendly, elegant and creative and ready to provide personalized attention to our visitors. Many of the staff are mothers themselves, and all of them are passionate about the integrity and beauty of our merchandise. So, in giving thought to gifts ahead of Mother’s Day, I asked my team to share their personal staff picks for Mother’s Day.
Assistant Manager Nubia Bowman is an avid lover of nature and holistic healing who brings a sense of peace and balance to The Shop’s aesthetic.
As a childbirth educator, doula and student midwife, I am always thinking about ways to comfort and pamper the mother-to-be, so I absolutely adore ‘Earth Mama Angel Baby’s’ “Mama-To-Be” products. I especially love the natural stretch oil and assortment of teas. The “Pocket Full of Pregnancy Pampering” is a wonderful Mother’s day gift for any soon-to-be mother on your list.
For myself, for Mother’s Day I love the idea of a spa escape without having to leave my home. This gift basket filled with goodies from Barr & Co is complete with a bath elixir, body scrub, bath salts and hand cream, all scented with calming oatmeal and lovely vanilla with vetiver, for a truly relaxing experience. Customizing a basket for yourself or your mom personalizes the gift and sweetens the deal.
The effortless grace of Lorraine Petrelli is evident in all that she does, and she brings to Wave Hill many years of experience in fine retail and a remarkable eye for jewelry.
Sure to grace their way into mom’s heart are the simple yet elegant jewelry designs created by Jim Aufdehaar. My favorite piece in the entire store is a multi-colored sapphire necklace.
The interplay of the muted tones of color will take that little black dress to the next level! Yet it will work equally well with her favorite tee and casual pair of jeans. Dress it up, dress it down is the theme here! Should mom prefer a bolder, more contemporary look, come in and take a peek at the collection designed by Tip to Toe. (Don’t you just love that name!) Handcrafted, sterling silver necklaces and earrings offering whimsical designs will be a favorite of hers for years to come…
And just think how surprised mom will be when she finds your selection tucked inside a lovely silk-brocade jewelry pouch, waiting to hold all of her favorite baubles, bangles and beads. Shades of purple, lilac and green—spring colors at their best—we stock them in two different styles, one ideal for travel, the other perfect for mom’s dresser or night table.
Local resident and mom Christi Ireland is fun and friendly, and always especially thoughtful of others.
Mother’s Day is right around the corner, and as a mother of three I like to make the day extra-special by choosing a gift for each of my children. The kid’s section in the shop is my favorite. I am always in search of something unique yet fun and durable for my kids to play with and the kids section never lets me down. In addition to wonderful books that include gorgeous pop-ups, classic tales and beautifully illustrated stories, I love the toys and clothing. We carry sun hats and super-soft baby and toddler clothes by Zutano, a small Vermont company which prides itself on being both sustainable and environmentally sound. I love that their employees’ babies are welcome at work!
Shop Associate Mai Kikuchi is a Museum Studies student at The City College of New York and brings to our team a lively creative edge.
My must-haves for Mother’s Day are stationery cards, especially Lucca Paperworks Mother’s Day card and Paula Skene’s flower card for Mother’s Day. I have two mothers to celebrate for Mother’s Day—with my biological mother and my mother-in-law. My biological mom is in Japan where I was born and raised. We always communicate via emails and texts, and a handwritten note is very special, especially these days. In our email correspondence, she often corrects my messy Japanese writing and she starts thinking that I am no longer able to write proper Japanese! For this year’s Mother’s day, I would like to show her that I am still capable of expressing myself in Japanese. Also, she lets me pursue what I want to do, so the message on the Lucca Paperworks’ card is perfect: “Mom, thank you for inspiring me to dream with my eyes open.”
My mother-in-law does not want me to buy any gifts. But I really want to show my appreciation since she is one of the most generous people I have met in my life. So I will write a message on a beautiful Mother’s Day card. I chose Paula Skene’s card for her because she loves flowers. With or without a gift, sending a warm and personal note always makes anyone happy!
Jenah here again…As for my own picks, I love all the products that I buy for Wave Hill—it is important for me to believe in the merchandise I select—and it will be my pleasure to help you find the perfect gift for your own mother. Rainbow moonstone jewelry (the ultimate stone of feminine goddess energy), flower seeds and exquisite cards are what I have selected for my own mother and mother-in-law. If they lived nearby, I would also take them beautiful flowering orchids! For myself, I have asked my family to visit The Shop on Mother’s Day weekend to choose an artisanal, organic scent by Thorn and Bloom perfume, one of our special in-store vendors on Mother’s Day weekend.
There is really no more perfect place to celebrate the love and strength of Mom then in the serene grace of this landscape.
